On 2 and 3 July 2025, a team of officials of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, led by the Governor of the HCAA, visited the construction site of the new Kastelli Airport of Crete. The Governor and the staff of the Authority carried out an on-site assessment of the facilities and were informed by the management of the New Heraklion International Airport of Crete about the progress of the project.

During the visit, the progress of work on key infrastructures was reviewed and technical and regulatory issues related to the areas of safety and environmental compliance were discussed, also in view of the need to assess the aerodrome and its systems against the respective European framework.
The visit was carried out in the context of the timely preparation for the future certification by the HCAA of the new Kastelli International Airport, which will replace the existing Heraklion International Airport, adopting the most current specifications for the design and operation of airports.
