Celebration of the three-year anniversary of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority / Athens / 7th May 2025

Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority celebrated its three-year anniversary with a special event that took place on May 7th at the Authority's premises.

The event was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Christos Dimas, the Secretary General of Transport, Mrs. Despoina Paliarouta, the former Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr Christos Staikouras, and representatives of the Greek aviation market.

The most important achievements of the Authority in all areas related to civil aviation activity in Greece were presented during the event, as well as the significant progress made, as recorded in the results of the assessments by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). These achievements were reflected in a special anniversary edition published by the HCAA and presented in the context of the celebration of the Authority's three years of operation.

The Secretary General of ICAO, Mr. Juan Carlos Salazar, welcomed the high performance of the country in the field of aviation safety and security, noting both the historical role of Greece in civil aviation and the dynamism of the Greek aviation market.

Mr. Luc Tytgat, former Executive Director of EASA and current Advisor to the HCAA Governor, focused on the remarkable achievements of the Authority’s three years of operation and referred to the significant advantages of the existing HCAA structure, while stressing the added value brought by the high level of cooperation between the State actors and also between the Authority and the aviation stakeholders.

Mr. Christos Dimas, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, referred to the need to strengthen the actions that upgrade aviation safety and support the further improvement of the country’s air transport system, while Mr. Christos Staikouras referred to the establishment of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority based on the standards of the respective European authorities, referring inter alia to the important initiatives in support of the Authority undertaken by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The HCAA Governor, Dr. Christos Tsitouras, stated: “The remarkable dynamics of the civil aviation sector in Greece, as reflected in the high growth rates of the aviation sector in the country, require us to constantly upgrade the level of oversight performed by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and lead us to achieve ever higher levels of training and competence of our staff. We are committed to continuing the work that has been achieved over the last three years with the operation of the independent Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, serving with consistency and a high sense of responsibility the passengers who entrust the civil aviation system in Greece. The HCAA has all the guarantees for the continuation of its successful course in the future”.

Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority was established by Law 4757/2020 and started its operation in January 2022. Based in Athens, the HCAA is an independent administrative authority, responsible for performing certification and oversight to the aviation stakeholders in Greece, while also having regulatory responsibilities for the aviation sector.
