Safety Bulletin – Responsible Use of UAS and Information on Flights near Airports

On the occasion of recorded incidents of the appearance of UAS in airport areas in European states, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) informs that the appearance of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in airport areas without special authorisation constitutes a serious threat to flight safety and the operation of the aviation system.

According to the applicable regulatory framework, UAS flights are not permitted in airport areas and in zones of critical infrastructure, such as energy facilities, telecommunications, ports, military installations, and government buildings.

For the proper planning of each flight, interested parties who intend to conduct UAS flights in airport areas are obliged:
• to consult before each activity the official restriction map on the Drone Aware GR platform (https://dagr.hasp.gov.gr/#map_page),
• to submit an application for a flight authorisation in airport areas to the address [email protected], for the examination of the procedure by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), with the cooperation of any co-competent services, depending on their jurisdiction.

The HCAA points out that compliance with the rules contributes decisively to flight safety and to the smooth operation of airports.

The conduct of flights without the required authorisation constitutes a breach of legislation and entails sanctions, including administrative fines, criminal penalties, and seizure of equipment.

The Authority remains at the disposal of UAS users for any clarification and cooperates steadily with all involved stakeholders in order to ensure a safe and modern flight environment.
