Dr. Eng. Georgios Ikonomopoulos joined the new Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority in December 2021 and was appointed as Flight Standards Director in December 2021.

The main activities of Flight Standards Division are the regulation and surveillance of all Air Operators, Continuing Airworthiness Management Organizations, Maintenance Organizations, Mechanic and Pilot Training Organizations, Issue of Pilot and Mechanic Licenses, Drones and Drone Licenses, General Aviation, with main place of activities within the Hellenic Republic.

He worked for 23 years in the old Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, first as Airworthiness Inspector (1999 – 2021), as Head of Accident and Occurrence Investigation Section (2010 – 2020), and as Head of Airworthiness Section (2020 – 2021), gaining significant experience in areas such as: Inspection of Aircraft Airworthiness, Maintenance Organizations, Continuing Airworthiness Management Organizations, Training Organizations for Mechanics, and Occurrence Reporting, by applying National Legislation, JAA Regulations, and EASA Legislation.

He has extensive experience in oversight activities in the above mentioned domains by applying European and National Legislation.

He holds a Ph.D. of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in Aerospace Engineering, and a University Degree of Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He worked as Research Aeronautical Engineer at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and at the University of Besancon – France, with considerable publications in scientific journals, important participation in scientific conferences and congresses, as well as participation in some research projects BRITE – EURAM of the European Union.
