Avoiding mid-air collisions – iConspicuity

EASA:

One of the key risk areas for General Aviation (GA) is mid-air collisions. In the EASA Member States (MSs), there are an average of 6 fatal collisions every year — tragically leading to the loss of 13 lives every year.

The goal is for every pilot and passenger to land safety after every flight to fly another day. Whenever you flight to the sky, it is important to "Be Seen and Be Aware".

EGAST Leaflet GA1 Collision Avoidance

  • See-and-avoid’ is the main method used to minimise the risk of collision when flying in visual meteorological conditions. It is an integral part of a pilot’s ‘situational awareness’, in other words the skill involved in looking outside the cockpit or flight deck and becoming aware of what is happening around the aircraft. Actively looking for possible traffic and obstacles, for instance.
  • This Leaflet is based on the ICAO Circular 213–AN /130 and on Safety Sense leaflet produced by the UK CAA. It will help pilots to make ‘look-out’ more effective. It should be of interest to all pilots, regardless of the type of aircraft they fly.

Valuable published information:

  • Visit EASA site on i-Conspiquity and find valuable information:
    • "Be Seen" by getting ADS-L compatible equipped
    • "Be Aware" by using pilot tools and visual techniques effectively
    • "Be Seen and Be Aware" to Fly Another Day

  • Visit the Norwegian CAA site and follow the course on “Electronic Conspiquity”
    • Electronic conspicuity has long been a crucial barrier to avoiding collisions between aircraft. Previously, such systems were reserved for larger aircraft, but as technology has advanced, solutions better suited to other airspace users, such as small aircraft, paragliders, and drones have emerged. All these systems have their different advantages and disadvantages. Understanding them is important for making informed decisions when deciding upon what system you should choose and how to use it.
